Connecticut Transportation

Newcomers to Connecticut can look forward to an efficient network of transportation facilities, from major highways to mass transit opportunities. The system of high-speed thoroughfares, fixed-route buses, ferries, and passenger rail service not only serves the entire state of Connecticut but provides direct links to important destinations in neighboring New York State. Ride-sharing, van pools, and tax benefit programs for public transportation play vital roles in the overall transit plan.
Highway Travel
Interstate 95 travels along the expanse of Connecticut’s Long Island Sound shoreline, providing a direct link to all points within the state as well as New York, Boston, or Providence, RI. Interstate 84 heads north from New Haven (I-95 interchange) through Hartford, linking with the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) north of Springfield, MA.

The Merritt Parkway provides yet another regional thoroughfare: State Route 15 links with New York State’s Hutchinson River Parkway at Greenwich and becomes the Wilbur Cross Parkway near Bridgeport, connecting with Interstate 91 at Meriden. Public Transportation
Residents of Connecticut have a number of efficient transportation alternatives to driving their own automobiles. The state’s extensive bus and rail mass transit system provides commuter rail lines, branch lines, CTTRANSIT bus divisions, and an entire network of transit districts. Those who are in need of paratransit services will be able to locate assistance in all areas that provide standard fixed-route services. Schedules and routes are designed to meet the widest possible range of public transportation needs for quick commutes to work, school, shopping, and entertainment.
